Beauty is Biocultural

In Cali and the Pacific, nature intertwines with a rich diversity of cultural expressions, giving rise to living biocultural territories. A deep, everyday connection that inspires us to narrate, create, and resist from who we are: culture and ecosystem in constant dialogue.

Purpose: How can we convey the relationship between cultures and biodiversity in the Colombian Pacific in a close and alternative way?

Challenge: To transform the COP16 Green Zone into an emotional, popular, and participatory space, using everyday language and artistic expression.

Solution: We launched 'Beauty is Biocultural,' a campaign co-created with the Colombian Ministry of Culture that celebrated the connection between territory and culture at COP16, through traveling experiences using art, oral tradition, and technology, thanks to the participation of artists and collectives who brought it to life:

  • Introducing Don Fruto, ambassador of popular wisdom, who with his Biocultural Cart got hundreds of attendees exchanging fruit for proverbs.

  • We intervened in public spaces with the first augmented reality murals in Cali, where art and technology made the species of the Pacific shine.

  • We launched La Chaza Fanzinera, a meeting place for reflecting on culture and ecosystems.

  • We opened the microphones of Guayaba Community Radio with Gusano, amplifying the voices of Cali's children.

  • We took the campaign to digital with the support of Yo Creo en Cali, our media partner, to make Biocultural Beauty felt on social media as well.

Impact: More than a passing campaign, Beauty is Biocultural was a creative takeover of public space, a collective act that, over the 12 days of COP16, transformed bioculturalism into an immersive experience through art and technology.

  • With more than 10,000 real-life interactions between people who exchanged fruit for proverbs, scanned the augmented reality mural, and received informational materials, we demonstrated that another way of talking about biocultural issues is necessary.
